Mischa Maisky, cello
Lily Maisky, piano
Sascha Maisky, violin
Yossif Ivanov, violin
Blythe Teh Engstroem, viola
The legendary cellist Mischa Maisky is joined here by his family trio – his daughter Lily on piano and his son Sascha on violin – alongside violinist Yossif Ivanov and violist Blythe Teh Engstroem. The quintet, with its remarkable emotional depth, tackles two masterpieces, two absolute pinnacles of German Romanticism: first, Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat major, Op.44, a radiant, lyrical work which, for the first time, incorporates the piano into the traditional string quartet. Next, Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F minor, Op.34 – a veritable miniature symphony of exceptional dramatic intensity, oscillating between melancholy and fiery dynamism. A masterful programme!
